When someone is diagnosed with a chronic condition most of the attention is on the medical part of the illness. However, an important aspect to the treatment of the condition and overall wellbeing of the person is how they deal mentally and how they manage their relationships.
It is important not help the person too much so they can maintain autonomy in their daily life, but just enough so they can feel supported. Communication is essential to ensure the balance is right. There may be times that the support needs to increase or reduce, It’s best to put plans in place as the person with the chronic condition may not be able to articulate what they want in a time of intense pain or fatigue. This can lead to conflict.
